AFRIQUE/CONGO R.D. - Nomination du Coadjuteur de Lubumbashi
Rome (Agence Fides) – Le Saint-Père Benoît XVI, en date du 31 juillet 2008, a nommé Archevêque Coadjuteur de l’Archidiocèse Lubumbashi (République Démocratique du Congo) Son Exc. Mgr Jean-Pierre Tafunga, S.D.B, Il est né le 25 juillet 1942. Il a été ordonné prêtre salésien de don Bosco le 16 septembre 1972 et ordonné évêque en janvier 1993 du diocèse d’Uvira. (S.L.) New epsicopal see for Bishop Tafunga

(ANS – Vatican City) – On 31 July, the Holy Father appointed Bishop Jean-Pierre Tafunga, Salesian, as Auxiliary of the Archdiocese of Lubumbashi, Democratic republic of the Congo. Bishop Tafunga, appointed residential bishop of Kilwa-Kasenga by John Paul II in June 1992, was consecrated on 31 January 1993 by Archbishop Eugenio Kabanga Songasonga, the then archbishop of Lubumbashi. Following that, in June 2002 he was assigned to Uvira, still in the Democractic Republic of the Congo. __________________________________________________

The Salesian missionary was born in Panda-Likasi in 1942. He was ordained a priest in 1972 and consecrated a bishop in 1993. Archbishop Floribert Songasonga Mwitwa, aged 70, has headed Lubumbashi since 1998. the Archdiocese of Elisabethville (as Lubumbashi was formerly known) was established in November 1959. it has seven suffragan dioceses: Kalemie-Kirungu, Kamina, Kilwa-Kasenga, Kolwezi, Kongolo, Manono and Sakania-Kipushi. The archdiocese serves a population about 2.4 million, slightly over a million of whom are Catholic.
