"Oecuménisme"

Le défi de l'évangélisation, selon la prière de Jésus est: " Que tous soient un … afin que le monde croie que tu m'as envoyé " (Jn 17,21), " pour rassembler l'Univers " (Eph. 1.10).

Notre recherche de l'Unité est fondamentalement l'accueil d'une grâce que Jésus veut nous accorder. C'est dans cet esprit que nous avons exprimé notre engagement œcuménique: " Avec les Chrétiens des autres Eglises nous cherchons les chemins de l'Unité pour laquelle Jésus a donné sa Vie. Cette Unité est intimement liée à la Mission qu'Il a confiée à l'Eglise "

Notre démarche missionnaire en Afrique c'est d'aller à la rencontre des Chrétiens et des Eglises Chrétiennes, dans la simplicité de la vie de nos communautés humaines et chrétiennes. Nous voulons grandir ensemble dans une connaissance mutuelle, et si possible, collaborer au service du Royaume, par exemple dans la vie sociale, la Justice et pour la Paix..

Nous espérons que notre engagement contribuera au mouvement commun des Chrétiens Africains, au-delà de l'histoire de la première évangélisation qui leur a légué ce fardeau des antagonismes et des divisions.

Cet engagement missionnaire n'est pas une œuvre missionnaire personnelle, ni celle de notre Société, il est " service en communion avec les Eglises d'Afrique ". Ces Eglises vivent déjà une réelle fraternité par tant de liens et d'engagements sociaux et politiques et même dans la prière partagée. Nous y voyons une belle promesse pour leur engagement œcuménique que nous aimerions favoriser et promouvoir dans la collaboration fraternelle.

Ici à Nairobi ( Kenya), où je partage la vie de l'Eglise locale, je demande régulièrement l'hospitalité dans différentes Eglises Chrétiennes pour vivre et mieux comprendre ensemble, si possible, la prière du Maître de la Moisson : " qu'ils soient un " !

"Ecumenism"

We all know the specific challenge to evangelization expressed in the prayer of Jesus: "May they all be one…so that the world may believe that you have sent me." (John 17,21) The Letter to the Ephesians speaks of "uniting all things in him". (1,10)

Our search for Unity can therefore be understood in terms of a grateful welcome to the grace which Jesus wishes to give to us. It is in this spirit that we express our ecumenical commitment. "With the Christians of other Churches, we search for the paths of that Unity for which Jesus gave his Life. This Unity is intimately connected with the Mission which he entrusted to his Church."

Our specifically missionary approach is to seek encounter with Christians and Christian Churches in the ordinary life of our human and Christian communities. We wish to grow together in knowledge of each other and, if possible, in mutual collaboration in the service of the Kingdom by working together for Justice and Peace in social life.
"When he wishes, and as he wishes, the Lord will bring us together," said the Abbé Couturier.

We hope that our commitment will make a contribution to the wider movement of African Christians as they seek to shed the burden of antagonisms and divisions which was brought to them along with the first evangelization.

This missionary commitment is not a kind of personal crusade, nor is it in any way a monopoly of our Society. It is "service in communion with the Churches of Africa". These Churches are already living in real fraternity through common social and political commitments and often also through prayer in common. We see here a fine promise for an ecumenical commitment which we wish to support and promote in a spirit of fraternal collaboration.

Here in Nairobi, where I share in the life of the local Church, I often pay friendly visits to different Christian Churches. In this way we learn to live together and to understand together, if possible, the prayer of the Master of the Harvest: "May they be one!"
